About the Szott Foundation

Our story is born out of tremendous love and great loss. My husband, David, son, Brian, and I know the pain of losing not one child/sibling, but two, to cancer. After losing our second child in March of 2006, David, and I began to feel the burning of a desire that originated in the depths of our spirits. We wanted to give the gift of time to help families with children suffering from life-threatening cancer.

During both of our children's illnesses I was able to spend time with them by taking an unpaid leave from my job. I began to know the challenge of paying the bills, dealing with insurance companies, worrying about keeping up with financial commitments. and managing the daily affaires of a busy family life with seriously ill children. But the time spent with Andrew and then Abby after their diagnoses, was precious and unforgettable. I would not trade one moment I had with my children for anything in the world.

Our desire is that other parents be blessed with the opportunity to spend time with their sick children. As a result, the Andrew and Abby Szott Foundation became a reality on July 31, 2006. It is with gracious and generous hearts that we are able to serve families in this capacity.

How The Application Process Works

Due to the tremendous need and desire for families to stay home and care for their children with life-threatening cancer, we found it necessary to establish a process for applying for a grant through the Andrew and Abby Szott Foundation.

All initial communication must take place between the family and the hematology/oncology social worker at the clinic or hospital. Families may not apply directly to the Szott Foundation for a grant.

If you have a child that has been diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer and you want to stay home from work full time to be with your child, please contact your social worker and ask for information about grants provided by the Szott Foundation. Your social worker has the application and is familiar with the process. He/she will be happy to assist you through it. If you have questions, please read our Frequently Asked Questions to see if your answer can be found there. If you have additional questions, please contact your social worker.

When all parts of the application have been completed by you and the medical personnel caring for your child, the social worker will forward your application to the Szott Foundation Board of Directors for review.

The Szott Foundation understands that this is a tremendously difficult time for your family and we will do everything we can to expedite the process and notify you as soon as possible of our decision.
